Women giving birth are on average less likely to have a prior induced abortion than a comparison group of pregnant women chosen to represent all pregnancy options (i.e., induced abortion of this pregnancy as well as delivery). 8 For example, an Italian study reported an OR of for the comparison group with women giving birth, but an OR of 1.   This is not to say, however, that abortion causes adverse pregnancy outcomes. Instead, some women who have abortions may also have other life events or risk factors that predisposed them to having low-birth weight babies and/or pre-term births (as opposed to the abortion leading to these complications).

A Dutch study compared the outcome of subsequent pregnancies of women who had at least one abortion in a previous pregnancy with the outcome in an age matched group of with no abortion history. % women with abortion history had deliveries prior to the 32nd week of gestation compared to only % of the women with no abortion history. Results from the ongoing smoking, nicotine and pregnancy trial, a double-blind placebo-randomized control trial of NRT in pregnancy (Coleman, ), which is expected to end in , should help to clarify the effects of NRT use during pregnancy on birth weight.

Results. The predicted probability of reporting that abortion was the right decision was over 99% at all time points over three years. Women with more planned pregnancies and who had more difficulty deciding to terminate the pregnancy had lower odds of reporting the abortion was the right decision (aOR= [, ] and [, ], respectively). “ The Effects of Short Term Variation in Abortion Funding on Pregnancy Outcomes.” Journal of Health Economics 18(2): “ Effects on Pregnancy Outcomes of Changes in the North Carolina State Abortion Fund.” Population Research and Policy Review
